Autumn Delights on the Costa del Sol

Although most people think of the Costa del Sol as a summer destination, one of our favourite times of year is Autumn and we’re sure you’ll love it too. There’s a mass exodus of tourists at the end of August, so you can enjoy the beautiful weather and fun activities without the crowds (we feel very smug about living here this time of year).

One of our favourite autumn activities is a visit to one of the chestnut toasting festivals which take place around the end of October and the beginning of November. In our local white village of Ojen, they hold their annual “Toston” festival on Sunday 9th November from 10am. This is a celebration of autumn treats where chestnuts are roasted on the streets and accompanied by local wines, foods and live music. You’ll be able to smell the roasting chestnuts from the hotel and it’s just a short distance, only 10 minutes’ drive from our door, so this is a great time to visit.

As well as sampling the food and partying, you can join one of two hikes in the beautiful countryside, which leave Ojen at 10am. If that sounds a bit strenuous, you can explore Ojen with a guided walk around the town which leave at 11.00 and 13.00. If you want to take part in the guided walks or the hikes, you need to sign up by calling 952 881 003 before 7th November. We can help you with booking on this hike if you’re staying but don’t speak Spanish, so please just let us know.

Another great way to enjoy this special season is to take a walk up to the Refugio de Juanar, very close to our beautiful boutique hotel and just up the road from Marbella. This is the starting point of the hike up to the iconic La Concha Mountain and its stunning scenery looks particularly wonderful in the autumn. The weather is perfect for walking this time of year and we’d recommend following the Spanish tradition of collecting chestnuts up there on 1st November. It’s a lovely walk and you’re welcome to bring the chestnuts back to The Urban Villa, so we can roast them for you – they are the perfect snack with a chilled glass of wine or sherry.

Chestnuts are so delicious and seasonal and can be collected on our doorstep, so we’ve been thinking hard about how we can celebrate them. Our talented cook Suny has been inspired to create a 6-course tasting menu centred around these delicacies. It starts with two very special Chestnut cocktails; That Old Chestnut (with rum and chestnut liqueur) and a yummy Chestnut Manhatten (with bourbon, bitters and chestnut liqueur). These cocktails set the scene for a 6-course chestnut extravaganza including; chestnut empanadas, seared scallops with leeks and chestnuts, chestnut and chorizo soup, confit quail legs with chestnut puree, wild boar stew with chestnuts, ravioli of rabbit confit mushroom consommé & candied chestnuts and a dessert of Caramelised fig, chestnut & honey tart, crème anglais. Delicious and under 40€ per person! Reservations are essential and this special menu will only be available during October and November, so don’t delay.
