Ahead of our Yoga and Ayurveda retreat at The Urban Villa from January 30th to February 6th 2016, we’ve asked teacher Lori Sjollema to explain to us about Ayurveda, what it is and why it’s beneficial and also explain how this fits with yoga – over to you Lori.
It’s a new Era, full of possibilities, challenges and accelerating changes. We seek more than ever a life-style that enhances our well-being, energy and life longevity. In a world full of misguided information and too many choices we are realizing how important it is to take responsibility for our own health and healing processes.
Ayurveda, Ayur means life veda means knowledge, is an ancient system of holistic healthcare that is becoming increasingly popular in the West today. Ayurvedic medicine focuses on all areas of health, including diet, lifestyle, exercise, detoxification, sleep, and the mind.
A sister science to Yoga, Ayurveda emerged from the sacred texts of ancient India, dating back at least five thousand years and is regarded widely as humanity’s oldest literature.
According to Ayurveda & Yoga, health is not a ‘state’ defined by lab tests or yearly check-ups. It is a continuous process that demands participation and embraces all aspects of life: physical, mental, emotional, behavioural, spiritual, familial, social, and universal. Achieving balance on all levels of being is the true measure of vibrant health and in today’s world it takes courage and an amount of effort to ‘go against the grain’ of human and society conditioning.
The doctor’s prescription of Ayurveda is very simple: recognize the power of self-healing within, and you will become your own greatest doctor!
It makes sense…
Self-understanding is the foundation of life, by understanding your own unique body and mind, you can better understand your psychological tendencies, your strengths and your weaknesses as well as your physiological strengths and weaknesses. Ayurveda and Yoga shows us the way to REMOVE DIS-EASE, and empowers us to take control of our own health.
‘Our background and circumstances may have influenced who we are but we are responsible for what we become.’
A healthy Yoga retreat away from your normal daily activities, habits and behaviours is a great way to start the year right and the inspirational setting of the Urban Villa is the perfect place to put this into practice.
Join us 30 January to 06 February 2016 to practice Yoga and learn more about the natural way to heal the body according to the science of Ayurveda. The intention of this retreat is to learn more about how to heal your own body, mind, uplift the spirit and gain self-empowerment. Taking part in this retreat will help you create a more harmonious balance on all levels of your being.
